Back-channel talks with Pakistan to save Kulbhushan Yadav: Harish Salve

BanglaHunt Desk: Pakistani security forces arrested Kulbhushan Jadhav on March 3, 2016 on charges of espionage and terrorism. Efforts are being made to persuade the government through back-channel to bring back Kulbhushan Yadav, an Indian national and former naval officer imprisoned in Pakistan. And Harish Salve has taken part in this work. Salve is India's counsel in the International Court of Justice in this case. He is again a former Solicitor General of India.

Harish Salve was sentenced to death by a Pakistani court in April 2016. Because the Pak government accused him of being a spy for India. “We hoped that if the Pakistani government spoke to us through the back door, we would persuade him,” Harish Salv told London in response to a question from the English newspaper The Indian Express. I will ask them to leave because of humanity. But it did not happen. In fact, the case of Kulbhushan Yadav became a matter of Pakistan's reputation.

Kulbhushan Yadav has been in Pakistani jail since 2016. Pakistan alleges Kulbhushan Yadav is India's spy. However, India has repeatedly denied this claim. He was arrested by Pakistani security forces on March 3, 2016 in Balochistan on charges of espionage and terrorism. In 2016, the matter was reported to the Indian ICJ. In July last year, a court on behalf of India asked Pakistan to grant consular access to Kulbhushan Yadav and reconsider the death sentence.

“We’re now wondering if we should go to ICJ again,” Salve said. In fact, Pakistan has not yet taken any action in this regard. He added that Pakistan has not yet shared a copy of the FIR in this regard. Pakistan also did not provide a copy of the chargesheet. Even after repeated statements, no evidence is being provided from Pakistan.
