In the last 10 days, there has been a decline in the price of crude oil in the international market. After April 12, the prices of Brent crude oil and WTI crude oil have come down by more than 7 percent. On the other hand, there is a freeze in the prices of petrol and diesel in all the four metros of the country since last one year. After May 22, 2022, there has been no change in the prices of petrol and diesel in the country. Oil marketing companies have not made any change in the price of fuel since the month of April 2022. By the way, experts say that there can be a change in the prices of petrol and diesel in the coming days.

Change happened a year ago

Last year, on May 21, 2022, the country’s Union Finance Minister had announced to reduce the tax on petrol and diesel prices. After that excise duty on petrol was cut by Rs 8 per liter and on diesel by Rs 6 per litre, which came into force on 22 May 2022. Since then till today, there has been no change in the price of petrol and diesel in all the four metros including the country’s capital Delhi.

Some changes were seen in these states

By the way, some states have definitely made changes by reducing or increasing VAT. While some states have also imposed cess on the price of petrol and diesel. The Punjab government in the state cabinet meeting decided to impose a cess of 90 paise per liter on petrol and diesel. Kerala Finance Minister KN Balagopal also announced the imposition of cess on petrol, diesel and liquor in the second full budget of the LDF government. A social security cess of Rs 2 per liter will be imposed on petrol and diesel.

  5. Bengaluru: Petrol rate: Rs 101.94 per litre, Diesel rate: Rs 87.89 per liter
  6. Chandigarh: Petrol rate: Rs 96.20 per litre, Diesel rate: Rs 84.26 per liter
  7. Gurugram: Petrol rate: Rs 96.92 per litre, Diesel rate: Rs 89.79 per liter
  8. Lucknow: Petrol rate: Rs 96.54 per litre, Diesel rate: Rs 89.63 per liter

Petrol and diesel prices are fixed daily

Government oil marketing companies including Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) change their prices daily according to international benchmark prices and foreign currency rates. The change in the prices of petrol and diesel comes into effect from 6 am every day. Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently asked OMCs to cut retail prices of petrol and diesel if crude oil prices fall in the international market and if OMCs recover less. OMCs incurred a loss of Rs 21,200 crore due to selling petrol and diesel below the cost price.
