Banglahant Desk: Vishalakshi Devi is very popular among 133 crore gods and goddesses of Hindus. Bishalakshi is another form of Goddess Mahamaya Sati. The goddess Bishalakshi is also very popular in rural Bengal. There are temples of this goddess Bishalakshi in several parts of West Bengal.
The main temple of Goddess Bishalakshi is located at Mirghat, behind the Bishwanath Temple in Varanasi, India. According to the Puranas, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas is the temple of Goddess Bishalakshi in Varanasi. There is also a temple of Bishalakshi or Bashuli Devi at Sushuniya in Bankura district of West Bengal. The worshiper of this temple was Baru Chandidas, the author of Sri Krishnakirtan.
Bishalakshi Devi has a lot of glory in the agricultural, aquatic and forest living communities of Bengal i.e. the Sundarbans area. In particular, farmers, fishermen, people associated with the Mowali-Bawali profession worship this goddess. As the saying goes, as far as the jungles of the Sundarbans are concerned, so is the worship of this giant goddess.
While the goddess Shiva was dancing tandav with the body of Goddess Sati on her shoulder, Vishnu dismembered Sati's body in a handsome chakra to appease Mahadev. It is common knowledge that at that time the ears and coils of the goddess fell from this dismembered body. That is why the goddess Bishalakshi is known here as Manikarni. Many again think that this earring is only an ornament, it is not a part of the body at all. So this temple can also be called Uppeeth.
Again according to many, one of the three eyes of the goddess fell in this place. Mahamaya sees the whole world with divine eyes. So here this goddess is known as Bishalakshi Devi.
