Bengali Hunt Desk: A police team was attacked while trying to stop prayers at a mosque during a lockdown in a village in Assam's Laxmipur district. Four policemen were injured in the attack.
A police team led by Biswajit Nath, in-charge of Nowboicha police station, reached Pandhoba village on Thursday night when they came to know about the incident. An official said, “The beginning of the gathering in the mosque was received from the village headman.”
When the police team reached the spot, 12 people, including the imam, were present inside the mosque. Officials said the police requested the imam not to offer prayers in this way while maintaining social distance. The official said the police team closed several shops that were open next to the mosque.
He said they were attacked when a police team was leaving the mosque. The police were ready for the attack. Four policemen and the village chief were injured after the incident. Police vehicles were also vandalized in the incident.
Biswajit Nath, Assam Police Constable Karuna Bujarbarua, CISF jawans Bhumichar Narjari and Saroj Jadan and village head Abdul Jalil Farshi were injured in the incident. Police said all the injured were rushed to the hospital. However, the police said that they were not seriously injured. On Thursday night, a senior official arrived at the scene and instructed people in the area to stay at home through loudspeakers.
A large number of police have been deployed in the area. An FIR has been lodged against 12 persons at Laxmipur police station and investigation is underway.
