BanglaHunt Desk: Rajiv Kumar is taking over as the new Election Commissioner of India. Ashok Lavasa resigned from his post on Tuesday before the end of his term. A statement from the law ministry on Friday said Rajiv Kumar, the former finance secretary, was going to take charge of the election commission.
New position rights
Ashok Lavasa resigned on Tuesday before his term expired. At present, the last day of the term has been fixed on August 31. He will join the Asian Development Bank on August 31 as Vice President. Ashok Lavasa is replacing Divakar Gupta. On the same day, Rajiv Kumar, a 1984 batch Jharkhand cadre IAS officer, will take charge of the Election Commission in place of Ashok Lavasa's resignation.
Can be in charge of conducting Lok Sabha elections
The term of this newly appointed Election Commission Rajiv Kumar will be till 2025. In other words, he can be in charge of conducting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, after the retirement of Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Aurora in 2021, Ashok Lavasa is likely to be appointed in that place.

Rajiv Kumar has played a big role in bringing only 4 out of 10 state-owned banks. However, he is currently the Chairman of the Public Enterprises Selection Board till April 26, 2023. He is going to get the post of Election Commission of India before the expiration of his term.
