Sony is operating to integrate Discord into PlayStation consoles

PlayStation is now partnering with Discord, the common online interaction assistance, with a promise to “bring the Discord and PlayStation encounters closer alongside one another on console and cell starting off early subsequent calendar year.”

Details on what that would in fact entail are trim, and Sony’s announcement just says that the two companies are “hard at get the job done connecting Discord with your social and gaming practical experience on PlayStation Network.” Whether that indicates a whole-fledged Discord application coming to PlayStation consoles or a far more constrained integration (like connecting PSN and Discord accounts to much more quickly chat with close friends off platform) has still to be declared.

As element of the new partnership, Sony is also investing an unspecified volume of cash into Discord as section of its Series H expenditure round as a minority trader. Discord is a single of the most significant online communities, in particular for gaming fanatics, with about 140 million energetic end users as of December 2020. The company was reportedly in talks to be acquired by Microsoft in a $10 billion deal before this calendar year, but all those talks appear to have ended, with Discord determining to continue to be as an impartial corporation as an alternative.

Additional facts on how Sony is doing work to combine Discord into its PlayStation goods must be arriving in the coming months.
