The Government of India keeps on reviewing the medicines sold in the country from time to time. This time the government has banned the fixed dose combination (FDC) of 14 types of medicines. An expert committee found that it can harm the health of common people, so the government has decided to ban these 14 drug combinations.

The expert committee found that these 14 fixed drug combinations are benefiting the health of the people, their information could not be confirmed, nor was there any justification for it. That’s why it has been decided to ban these drug combinations.

What is a fixed dose combination?

Generally a medicine is prepared by mixing two or more active ingredients in an FDC. These ingredients are mixed in a fixed proportion only and on the basis of that proportion the medicine is prepared.

According to the notification issued by the government regarding this, the expert committee says that there is no solid evidence of health benefits from these drug combinations. Secondly, there is also a possibility of ‘risk’ to human health. Therefore, the government has decided to ban these drug combinations in the interest of mankind at large.

The government has banned the manufacturing, sale and distribution of FDC under Section-26A of the Drugs and Cosmetic Act-1940. Now the use of these drug combinations on patients cannot be justified.

344 FDCs have been banned earlier

Earlier, the government has banned 344 categories of FDCs in the country. However, in many of these cases, companies have challenged the government’s decision in different courts.
